Most colleges at OSU (Agriculture, Arts and Sciences, Business, Education, Engineering, and University Academic Services) provide a one-credit hour course devoted to helping incoming freshmen become more familiar with the University and how to make the most of the opportunities it provides.  The course, known simply as freshman orientation, varies from college to college depending on what the specific college believes to be the most important introductory information for their freshmen.

A&S 1111
A&S 1111 focuses on a wide variety of information and campus resources.  Students learn about various resource areas of the University and how they can use these to the fullest, regardless of their departmental affiliation.

  • Sections are limited to 25 students, providing the opportunity for close contact and personal attention not practical in larger freshman level courses.
  • Volunteers from University Student Affairs, Arts and Sciences Student Academic Services, and Arts and Sciences Faculty serve as course instructors, allowing students to come in contact with mentors and University administrators they may not otherwise get the chance to meet.
  • The course meets two days each week for 50 minutes through the 9th week of class.

A&S 1111 provides students with opportunities to learn how to excel.
Even though individual sections of A&S 1111 may use different activities during the semester, each class is based on the following course objectives:
  • To provide and introduction to the skills necessary for academic success.
  • To identify for students the resources for intellectual, personal and social growth available to them as member of the University community.
  • To examine the relationship of an Arts & Sciences education to the world of work.
  • To explain the philosophy, purpose and value of general education.
  • To introduce students to the purposes of higher education, to the role of the faculty, and to their responsibilities as students.
  • To provide opportunities for increased student awareness of themselves and others.
  • To explain degree sheets and requirements, curriculum planning, and the enrollment process.
A&S 1111 is especially helpful for new freshman and transfer students who would like to learn more about how to be a successful student at OSU.  Transfer students with more than 15 credit hours and non-traditional students are not required to take the course, but may enroll if they believe the information will provide new insights into their educational endeavors.  Because the course caters to freshmen, the course is not open to sophomores, juniors, or seniors.
