New Freshmen enroll for their first semester during summer enrollment programs where they meet with academic advisers and enroll on the same day. Students who cannot attend a scheduled program may make an appointment to see an advisor on a different day or may enroll on by mail. For information, contact the office of Admissions.

Continuing Students begin the enrollment process approximately half way through each semester. Students can meet with their adviser any time during the semester, but enrollment priority is based on the number of semester hours earned. Prior to advising appointments, continuing students should evaluate the classes they have taken in relation to their academic goals. By using the University Catalog and degree sheets for anticipated majors, students will be better prepared to make informed decisions regarding course options. Advisers assist with this process through discussion of academic goals and course choices with the student. Following advisement, students can enroll for the upcoming semester on their priority date.

Transfer Students may enroll during the semester prior to their arrival on campus. Transfer students participate in scheduled Transfer Days in the spring. For more information regarding transfer student issues see Transfer Student Information.

After meeting with an adviser and selecting classes, students schedule times for those classes and enroll. You may enroll:

  • In person, through Sectioning: You will take your signed trial study form to Sectioning, located in 321 Student Union, where the information is entered into the University computer by the sectioning staff. You are then provided a printout of your schedule.

  • On your own, through the OSU home page: If you prefer, you may enter your own enrollment through "SIS." Following advising, your advisor may clear you for self-enrollment, if you would like to have this option. This allows you to view and select classes you wish to take. Detailed instructions regarding this procedure are found in the class schedule book.

Enrollment Holds: The most frequent enrollment holds come from the Bursar's Office. If you have a past due account with the University, you will not be permitted to enroll in classes until the hold is cleared either by paying the outstanding bill or pleading your case to the Bursar's Office or Student Loan Counseling. A past due account could include parking tickets, books, tuition, and campus charges. Other enrollment holds include Admissions, the Health Center, the Library, the Colvin Center, the Student Union, Financial Aid, and science department laboratories. The time delay caused by an enrollment hold usually results in a less than desireable class schedule and can sometimes delay graduation if classes are filled.

Please Note: Once you have established your semester schedule, it is yours. You are responsible for the classes in which you have enrolled, unless you later drop and add courses or formally withdrawal from the University. Do not just stop attending and assume you will be dropped!

Changing your Schedule: The last day to add a class to your schedule is the Friday of the first week of class. The last day to drop a class without record of it on your transcript is Friday of the second week of class. Check the class schedule book to determine the % of your tuition you will be refunded for dropped classes.

Dropping Courses after the second week: From the third week until the Friday of the twelfth week you may drop courses with an automatic "w" placed on your grade report (a "w" is not a bad thing, as long as you don't make a habit of it).

Withdrawal from the University:  Once officially enrolled, but prior to the first day of class, you must inform the Registrar (744-6876) if you decide not to attend. If, after classes begin, you find that you cannot complete the semester, you must contact the office of Student Academic Services to complete a University Withdrawal. Failure to notify anyone usually results in an "F" for all courses. Read the "Official Notice" you receive with your schedule for details and keep it for future reference.
